THE SHOPPER - In 1971, The Shopper and Community Papers were established in New Bern by local publisher Zack Taylor. After 14 years of publishing The Shopper, Mr. Taylor sold The Shopper to Rick Davis.
Mr. Davis came to New Bern from Florida where he spent years in the newspaper business. Under Mr. Davis, The Shopper grew by launching Community Papers in New Bern’s higher income communities. In 1985, the Fairfield Harbour Beacon and Trent Woods Times were first published. Today, there are nine Community Papers published in Craven and Carteret counties by The Shopper. In addition to the Community Papers, Mr. Davis launched “Southern Hospitality” (now Discovery Coastal Carolina) and “Medical Guide”, two successful annual publications for newcomers and the medical community respectively.
In August 2004, Mrs Davis sold The Shopper and Community Papers to Freedom Communications. Jim Bretzius served as The Shopper’s first publisher. In August 2005, Mr. Bretzius retired and Chris Bumgarner was named publisher. Mr. Bumgarner remained until September 2007 when he left the company to persue publishing Kidsville News in Virginia.
The current publisher, Nancy Eckard, accepted the role in the fall 2007. Ms. Eckard has enjoyed a career in the newspaper business since 1973 in North Carolina and Florida. Her career began at the Durham Morning Herald & Sun before moving on to the Goldsboro News Argus. She moved to Florida in the mid 80’s accepting a position with Sunbelt Publication. Later in 2000 she joined the St. Petersburg Times in Florida and most recently worked with Media General Corporation in both Florida and North Carolina before accepting the role as Publisher for the Shopper & Community Papers with Freedom Communications. Her newspaper and special publication experience spans over 35 years.
